  • Wonderfall

Inviting smells, tastes, and textures means it’s officially fall. And marching band, which should never, ever be forgotten.

    leaves 1

The summer was so dry, I began to wonder if there would be any color to the leaves, but after receiving some much needed rain over the past few weeks, the colors have been quite beautiful. My friend Neal and I took a Sunday afternoon drive and with a little tweaking on his computer, we came up with the above photo. Fun, eh? I’m exceedingly thankful I live in a part of the country where I get to experience all four seasons.

With the arrival of fall comes a wonderful perk of working in education: fall break! Having a four day weekend prompted me to head south to visit my dear friends Brian & Meghan in Texas. While I have been fortunate to see them several times over the past few years, this was the first time I had taken a trip to visit them. Navigating my way through DFW, and not getting lost once!, reminded me just how much I miss living and driving in big cities. *sigh*

The relaxing began almost immediately as I took advantage of their backyard hammock. As I lay in the sunshine, I was overcome with the realization that I had nothing to worry about, was on vacation, and could fully live in a moment of repose. These moments are few and far between in my life and are thankfully embedded in my consciousness when the pace of life becomes frenzied.

The afternoon and evening included local sightseeing at the Fort Worth Stockyards

A visit to the 6th Floor Museum in downtown Dallas (the building where Lee Harvey Oswald shot JFK) was a saddening, yet educational experience that left me with more questions than answers.

    IMG_4053

Our afternoon was spent at IKEA! To say the least, it was an interesting experience to eat quality food at the store restaurant, browse the myriad of display rooms, and walk for what felt like miles looking at furniture and home accessories.

    IMG_4072

The evening was not complete without a jaunt to downtown Fort Worth where we took in the sights of the Bass Performing Arts Center

and ate fancy and delicious cupcakes at The Cupcakery.

On Sunday, October 23, I was fortunate enough to attend Game 4 of the World Series to see my St. Louis Cardinals play the Texas Rangers!!! Bucket list item...check!

    IMG_4079

Brian was proactive in buying tickets weeks in advance, long before the Rangers and Cardinals clinched their respective divisions. The World Series coinciding with my fall break was a true gift and definitely made this St. Louis girl proud to root her team on, despite a humiliating Game 4 loss. However, how about those games 6 and 7? 11 in 11, baby!

On my way home from Texas I was pleased as punch to pick up the new Coldplay album Mylo Xyloto and lovelovelove their new song “Paradise.” I’ve also been quite enamored with Sara Groves’ newest offering Invisible Empires and the Civil Wars Barton Hollow as of late.

As far as my personal knitting factory is concerned, business is booming! Behold my latest creations:

And I continue to add to my yearly total of books read, including these newfound favorites:
    - The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels by Ree Drummond
    - Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick

Scriptures and passages resonating within my heart, as of late:
“I don’t know whether he is a sinner,” the man replied. “But I know this: I was blind, and now I can see.” ~ John 9:25 (NLT)

“For where two or three gather together because they are mine, I am there among them.” ~ Matthew 18:20 (NLT, emphasis added)

“Make me strong. Make me wise. Make me human. Amen.” from the opera Dead Man Walking

“Screw your courage to the sticking-place, and we’ll not fail.”
    ~ Macbeth, Act 1, Scene 7

"This is your life. Are you who you want to be?" ~ Switchfoot

Now to look ahead to resting & spending time with loved ones over Thanksgiving and pondering how I can be a part of Advent Conspiracy this year.

  • Becoming

As laundry churns in the dryer, I have time to reflect on my day, week, and month. Although this marks the 5th week of the semester, yesterday was the first day I can say I’ve actually had time to sit at my desk and think about something other than what needs to be done next. I’m a planner to the core and therefore thrive on being busy and having a full schedule, especially when I know I’m helping people, but a reprieve from the hustle and bustle is sure nice every now and then.

School resuming also comes with stability and routine in other areas of my life, with some new additions. Knowing my friend Jaclyn was moving to California to begin seminary left a vacancy for our Sunday School class to have a teacher. I knew about her move for quite some time and had begun praying to see if the Lord would have me step into this position, which He has allowed me to do! Our young ladies group recently began studying Radical by David Platt, where we are being challenged to take Scripture at its core, apply it to our lives, and set aside our Christian comforts we so often think we “deserve.” I've also been dually challenged and encouraged by Scouting the Divine: My Search for God in Wine, Wool, and Wild Honey by Margaret Feinberg, which I finished last week. My two take-aways from many gems are as follows:
1.) The realization God plants seeds in the rocky areas of my life and brings forth fruit. It may not be as well-matured and beautiful, but He is able to use every area of my life for His glory.
2.) Even while wandering in the dessert, "God gave his people a taste of the better things that were to come" (p.142). Though the Israelites had not yet arrived in the Promised Land, God was still providing sweet nourishment along the way.

Other lessons God is teaching me:
1.) do I agree in knowing my sole purpose on this earth is to give Him glory?
2.) do I truly believe God answers prayer? My prayers?
3.) do I believe He can/will change the hearts of those who do not believe, for whom I long to trust Jesus as their Savior?
4.) living with a more generous spirit in how I spend time investing in the lives of others w/o strings attached // spending my money in wholesome ways w/o the worry of there not being enough.

    And a constancy:
"I will cause my people and their homes around my holy hill to be a blessing. And I will send showers, showers of blessings, which will come just when they are needed." ~ Ezekiel 34:26 (NLT)

Furthermore, my spirit has been encouraged and stimulated through a new community group I’ve joined. Most of our group are all from the same church, but some are not, and some are seeking. I am so excited to invest myself in these people as we learn more about each other; sharing in life’s struggles and joys. It’s our desire to bring others into the fold, engaging one another in spiritual discussions, loving on seekers with the love of Jesus, caring about them simply because they have value as people. The process of learning, relearning, discovering, embedding, believing scripture, and hearing God’s voice clearly brings a thrill to my soul.

Yesterday as I drove to work I noticed the side of a storage building had been spray painted with graffiti professing true love: Jesse loves Tamie. Immediately the Lord reminded me that His love for me is not proclaimed through a roadside attraction but on my very heart.

“But now, O Israel, the Lord who created you says:
‘Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called
you by name; you are mine’.” ~ Isaiah 43:1 (NLT)

“This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel
after that time,” declares the LORD.
“I will put my law in their minds
and write it on their hearts.
    I will be their God,
and they will be my people.” ~ Jeremiah 31:33 (NIV)

The way I view the Old Testament will forever be different because of a recent experience I am privileged to have had: attending a friend's bat mitzvah.

    IMG_3890

Being invited to celebrate this milestone in Allison life, her entrance into young womanhood, was a thrill in and of itself, but experiencing a full Shabbat service with Hebrew readings from the scrolls of the Torah, listening to the Temple congregants sing in modal harmonies from the prayer book, and eating bagels and lox afterward was a once in a lifetime opportunity for this Christian girl.

Later that evening I attended a local Cherokee pow-wow with friends. My senses were once again assailed, this time with tribal cries, colorful costumes, and the smells of Indian tacos.

    IMG_3893

A bat mitzvah and a pow wow in one day? Amazing.

Another exciting re-development is that our community knitting group has restarted! Last Tuesday was our first time to meet in several months and I loved not only seeing my yarn friends, but seeing all their wonderful projects: dishcloths, baby blankets, slouchy hats, hand embroidery...all so unique, just like us. Over the weekend I paid a visit to the public library to pick up my requested copy of The Knitter's Year: 52 Make-in-a-Week Projects-Quick Gifts and Seasonal Knits by Debbie Bliss and am pleased to have made 1 and ⅔ Christmas tree ornaments since then.

    IMG_3897
Three separate pieces, a quick sew up the back of each piece, stack them together, run thread through the tops of all three, and voila! Now to churn out at least a dozen more from my personal knitting factory between now and December...I think I can do it!

Other recent crafty and culinary feats:

    IMG_3888
Booties en route to baby Liam in Missouri!

    IMG_3889
Chocolate-espresso torte made for a dessert auction at church benefiting our mission team going to East Asia. This was the first time I’ve made a torte (flourless chocolate cake...oh so decadent) and look forward to making another where I can enjoy the spoils of my labor with friends. Maybe.

    IMG_3896
Courtesy of Emeril and Good Morning America, this butternut squash and apple soup recipe has quickly become one of my favorites and, yet again, did not disappoint.

With hints of fall in the air, the confidence of God's leadership in all areas of my life, opportunities to be creative, and live in community with others, I am reminded of a new favorite scripture, "Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the Lord has been good to you." ~ Psalm 116:7 (NIV)

  • Back to School

    The last vestiges of summer:

    IMG_3835
What a gift it was to have an entire weekend with Megan, my kindred-spirit and college accountability partner! Afternoon rain brought cooler temperatures, which allowed us to enjoy a comfortable movie night in the park (Iron Man 2).

Thanks to attending a cupcake decorating class at the public library, I came home with these: a Halloweenie swirl, ant (chocolate covered nuts) at a picnic (coconut shavings), lemon pie (yellow M&Ms), and lettuce (green frosting covered corn flakes) in dirt (Oreo crumbs).

    IMG_3850
Another weekend blessing in the form of a visit from Aarik & Brooke. A tour of my library and taking a picture in the Y collection was a must.

    IMG_3859
An adult lesson learned: even though you move to a new place, new friends move on to newer places. It filled me with sadness to say goodbye to my new friend Jaclyn, but send her off with blessings knowing God is going to do amazing things in and through her as she begins seminary in San Francisco. PLUS, I now have a terrific reason to travel and visit her!

After eight work weeks of four, ten-hour days and a lackluster student population on our rural campus, this week brought about the long-anticipated return of the fall semester. Seeing our library bustling with students coming and going brought a smile to my face and heart. As the new semester dawned Monday morning, I couldn't help but remember this delightful quote from You've Got Mail:
Don't you love New York in the
fall? It makes me want to buy school
supplies. I would send you a bouquet of
newly-sharpened pencils if I knew your
name and address. On the other hand,
this not knowing has its charms.

While I certainly don't live in New York, and it was still over 100 degrees in Oklahoma today, I am reminded that fall will come again. Last week I opened my closet and told my long-sleeved pants and shirts, "I'm sorry you've been neglected for so long. I promise I will wear you again...I just can't say when." Ah, fall - marching band performances, hay rides, turning leaves, and the prospect of Christmas coming again.

And though Christmas is still four+ months away, I cling to the promise of God's purpose in sending Jesus to this earth to be God with us every day of the year, not just on December 25. This week has been demanding, both mentally and emotionally...and I wish it were different. My heart has taken a beating, and while I desire to "live a life worthy of the Lord" (Colossians 1:10), this has honestly been easier said than done. In the midst of my relationship turmoils, Jesus is with me. When I don't see His hand at work, when I'm at my wits end, when I'm ready to give up He is still with me. When I don't want Him to be with me, when I wish He would leave me alone and let me do life my way, He gently tugs on my heartstrings and says to me, "Beloved, my ways are higher than your ways. I see the big picture. Keep trusting in me."

    Two things you told me
    That you are strong
    And you love me.
Your Love is Strong by Jon Foreman (Psalm 62:11-12)

    Yes and amen.

  • Broken

A weekend journey to America’s heartland serves to remind me of how the storms of life can be utterly devastating.

It’s hard to believe it’s been sixteen years since Oklahoma City experienced violence firsthand by a fellow American.

    Memorial4

    Memorial2

    168 lives lost.

And less than thirty miles away, the small community of Piedmont, Oklahoma, experienced tragedy when a tornado ripped through their community on May 24. One family lost two sons in the storm, a three year old and fifteen-month old.

As our group of youth and adults traveled to Piedmont to help with the recovery effort, we were reduced to silence and intermittent gasps of amazement as we saw the destruction firsthand. A whole neighborhood...gone.

    Piedmont1

    Piedmont2

When all you have left in this world is unceremoniously piled in a heap and your home has to be identified by a spray painted sign.
    When you wonder why.
When at the end of it all remains our Father. The Father who sees our brokenness, whose Son was broken on our behalf, and says to us “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28 NLT).

And yet, life continues to prevail. Terrorism, death, and the storms of life do not have the final word.

Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10 NASB).

We are a broken people, constantly in need of a Savior whose perfect will for our lives often does not make sense. We do not see the big picture, only disjointed pieces that sometimes only point to heartache and unexplainable tragedy this side of eternity.

And while there is no guarantee of tomorrow, we have been given today, so let’s live. Not being slaves to fear. Living. Joyfully, with the anticipation of eternity that He has placed in our hearts (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
